"Joyful Play"
The Fine Art of Japanese Calligraphy
Calligraphy is a very ancient art, first developed in China nearly 3,000 years ago, and then refined by the Japanese over the last 1,000 years or so. Calligraphy is a meditative discipline, as well as a fine art and springs from the same sources as Zen, kendo, sumi painting and bonsai. Kumiko finds that the aesthetic values of calligraphy and bonsai harmonize with and complement one another deeply.

"Flower" This piece expresses the vibrancy of spring. In Japan it would be assumed to represent a cherry blossom, in China, a peony. Kumiko studied calligraphy in Japan since the age of five. She is a master calligrapher and made her living that way in Tokyo until moving to the United States five years ago. She has given shows in Europe and America, as well as Japan.
Some of her work is shown below, including some limited edition pieces for sale that she feels go especially well with bonsai.
"Emptiness" "Ku" or "emptiness", is a major concept in Zen Buddhism. It means that each thing or individual is ultimately empty of a seperate existence, and so, all is one. "Wind" "Kaze", shows the spirit of the wind. "A Pure World" This large piece denotes purity through the image of a snow covered landscape Aki Gokoro, or "Autumn Heart"
"Water moon" This piece perfectly expresses the character of moonlight on water. "Iroh Poem" "Though gay in hue the blossoms flutter down also. Who then in this world of ours can continue on forever? Crossing today the uttermost limits of phenomenal existence I shall no longer see fleeting dreams, neither be intoxicated." --Author the Buddhist monk, Kukai.
